“The Product Midwife”
Carma Spence-Pothitt
Inside each and every one of us is at least one product or service – our gift – that will benefit the world. Of course, most of us have many gifts, talents, products and services inside us.
But sometimes it can be a challenge figuring out what these gifts are and how to get them out into the world. One of my gifts is the ability to see the gifts in others and to coach these gifts out of them.
At this point, you may be unclear as to what I mean by “coach.” My approach to coaching is to act as a partner to my clients – I am not above or better than my clients. As a coach, I develop a mutually respectful relationship with my clients and help them see what is already inside them.
My goal is to empower my clients to create and maintain their own unique products and services; to “give birth” to their gifts with greater confidence and the ability to repeat the process in the future without having to lean on me. For, giving birth to your own product and service can be an amazing experience that makes you stronger and more confident, qualities you were born to have.
I am able to do this because I was once in your shoes. I struggled for years – make that more than a decade – to give birth to my unique products and services. And, in the process, learned how to do more quickly and help others avoid the roadblocks I faced.
Now, I wasn’t sitting around twiddling my thumbs during this time. No, I was developing skills that ultimately will help you and all my clients move through the product/service life cycle quickly and efficiently.
I have more than 15 years experience in marketing communications, as well as writing and editing, in the fields of health care, food and wine, computers, business, television, biology and agriculture. I have a knack for making this complex material clear to people unfamiliar with the topic. I have built my career on helping people understand something that is new to them, taking information – from dry facts to common knowledge to scientific research – and making it sparkle with life.
My background is eclectic – I did mention I struggled with what my gift what, right? – including a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, a Master’s degree in Journalism from the number one public relations graduate program in the nation (according to U.S. News & World Report), and education in video production, science communication and dance.
In the late 1990s, I expanded my skills into the world of the Web, developing content for a variety of websites and, more recently adding WordPress web design skills. I launched and still manage an online travel magazine for science fiction, fantasy and horror fans, as well as numerous blogs on a wide variety of topics.
An award-winning editor, I’ve managed newsletters, magazines and e-zines, and have edited books, as well. I was a Toastmaster for six years – earning my Competent Toastmaster (CTM) Award and working half-way to my Able Toastmaster (ATM) Award, I even wrote, directed, starred in and produced a 27-minute video introducing new and prospective members to the Toastmasters experience.
I take this knowledge of science, marketing and communication, and a passion for the potential of the Internet, to help my clients meet their product development goals.
